Confirm presence and function of microchip between shoulder blades

As always client made aware of their option for a second opinion or specialist referral and ensure notes are emailed to client so that the patient can receive continuous care at any practice it is taken to.

Malaseb Wet / lather affected areas of skin.Leave lather on for 10 minutes then wash off with copious amounts of water. Dry the washed area well afterwards. Repeat this procedure TWICE a week for 2 weeks then at the veterinarian’s direction

Bland diet :advise feed /offer only a bland diet of water and cooked chicken or white fish and rice. Could also feed Hills I/D ( intestinal diet) or RC Gastro.Feed this bland diet for at least the next 48 hours before offering slow transition back to original diet

Vibravet 10% paste : administer the initial volume immediately then starting 12 hours later give ONE NOTCH AM and then PM  then 24 hours later give just ONE NOTCH ONCE a day until finished.

For both dogs and cats a loading dose of 5 mg doxycycline/kg should be administered orally followed at 12 hourly intervals by two doses of 2,5 mg/kg. Maintenance doses of 2,5 mg/kg are then given as single doses at 24 hour intervals for a further 5 days. The recommendation should be made when dispensing doxycycline that it be administered either in conjunction with or immediately following feeding.

Prednisone
TP1
Give ONE(1) pill ONCE a day for 3 days then a HALF (1/2) pill ONCE a day for FIVE (5) days then A HALF (1/2 pill  every other day for a further 6 days before stopping. .(Tapering dosaging)

TP2
Give TWO (2) pills ONCE a day for 3 days then ONE(1)  pill ONCE a day for FIVE (5) days then ONE(1) pill every other day for a further 6 days before stopping.(Tapering dosaging)

SAIDS

Warn owner regards SAIDS (steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
Prednisone is a glucocorticoid:  a steroid hormone normally produced by the adrenal cortex.
Side effects of your pet taking prednisone can include
PD/PU (polydipsia /polyuria) drinking a lot and urinating a lot
PP (polyphagia) increased or even excessive appetite
Panting - cortisone can affected the diaphragm muscles resulting in your pet panting more
Glucocorticoids and steroids should never be stopped suddenly. Drug dosage must be tapered over time in order to allow the adrenal cortex to start producing the hormones that have been replaced by the drug. Always follow your veterinarian's tapering schedule when coming off these drugs.

Long-term use of prednisone or other corticosteroids is not recommended for dogs or cats.
Long term use of the drug can result in diabetes and Cushing's disease.

Vaccination

Good scientific information from World Small Animal Veterinary Association came out in 2015 showing that mothers' colostrum provides maternal derived antibody (MDA) that interfere with viral vaccines in younger animals

Therefore guidelines have changed to recommend that puppy and kitten vaccinations continue until 16 weeks of age.

This means we now recommend vaccination at 8 , 12 and 16 weeks of age to ensure good immunity levels in puppies and kittens

Here is the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's full information page on why we recommend this protocol
(
http://www.wsava.org/sites/default/files/WSAVA%20Vaccination%20Guidelines%202015%20Full%20Version.pdf)

Even after puppies second vaccination ( at 12 weeks) we cannot guarantee good immunity to core diseases. Nonetheless we do suggest owners begin socialisation in the form of puppy classes and visiting friends who have vaccinated dogs or even a walk around the block . We do NOT however recommend going to a park or a beach or any form of off leash exercise

Mild oculonasal crusting which is consistent with feline herpes which is NOT in any way contagious to humans.
How common is it?Approximately 8 out of 10 cats have it.

Feline herpesvirus is widespread in the general cat population, with a reported seroprevalence of 50-97%.Transmission occurs via close contact with an infected cat and exposure to its respiratory, oral and ocular secretions. Kittens are most susceptible to primary infection, especially at 8-12 weeks of age when maternal antibodies decline. It is estimated that 80% of the feline herpes exposed cats become latently infected as the inactive virus resides in the trigeminal ganglion and corneal stroma. Of these cats, an estimated 45% will have spontaneous reactivation (recrudescence) of the virus sometime during their life either spontaneously or in response to stress.Common stressors include travel, relocation, boarding, breeding, parturition, lactation, and corticosteroid administration. Approximately 70% of latently infected cats shed virus after treatment with corticosteroids.Once stressed, a lag period of approximately 1 week occurs before viral shedding begins. Shedding then continues for a period of 1-2 weeks.1 A refractory phase of several months is then likely before viral shedding recurs.

Eosinophilic granuloma complex : EGC is a form of ‘reaction pattern’ seen in the skin of cats that may potentially be initiated by a number of underlying disorders, but it is thought that most, if not all, cases represent some form of allergic (hypersensitivity) disorder.

The skin lesions are often highly pruritic (itchy) and can be exacerbated by the cat licking them.

Use of prednisone vs apoquel vs cytopoint

Prednisone is a steroid with a rapid onset of action and is relatively inexpensive, but it has a higher risk of side effects, especially with long-term use.

Cytopoint and Apoquel both target itching in dogs, but they do so through different mechanisms related to interleukins, specifically Interleukin-31 (IL-31). Apoquel, an oral medication, inhibits the JAK-STAT pathway, reducing the production of IL-31 and other cytokines involved in inflammation and itching. Cytopoint, an injectable antibody, directly neutralizes IL-31, preventing it from triggering itch signals in the skin

Apoquel Inhibits the JAK-STAT pathway, which is involved in the signaling of several cytokines, including IL-31, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-13.

Cytopoint Uses a monoclonal antibody to bind to and neutralize IL-31 in the bloodstream, preventing it from reaching nerve receptors in the skin and causing itch.

In essence:

  • Apoquel reduces IL-31 production, while Cytopoint neutralizes existing IL-31.
  • Both are effective in managing itching associated with atopic dermatitis and other allergies.

Worming for puppies

Puppies need a intestinal parasite wormer every 2 weeks until they are 3 months old. The worm monthly until 6 months of age then every 3 months

Flea control  for puppies

External parasite control should start from 8 weeks of age – remember to buy a product that allows for the fast growth ( and increase in weight/surface area  ) of your puppy!
