For both dogs and cats a loading dose of 5 mg doxycycline/kg should be administered orally followed at 12 hourly intervals by two doses of 2,5 mg/kg. Maintenance doses of 2,5 mg/kg are then given as single doses at 24 hour intervals for a further 5 days. The recommendation should be made when dispensing doxycycline that it be administered either in conjunction with or immediately following feeding.
Warn owner regards SAIDS (steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) Long-term use of prednisone or other corticosteroids is not recommended for dogs or cats.
Vaccination Good scientific information from World Small Animal Veterinary Association came out in 2015 showing that mothers' colostrum provides maternal derived antibody (MDA) that interfere with viral vaccines in younger animals Therefore guidelines have changed to recommend that puppy and kitten vaccinations continue until 16 weeks of age. This means we now recommend vaccination at 8 , 12 and 16 weeks of age to ensure good immunity levels in puppies and kittens Here is the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's full information page on why we recommend this protocol Even after puppies second vaccination ( at 12 weeks) we cannot guarantee good immunity to core diseases. Nonetheless we do suggest owners begin socialisation in the form of puppy classes and visiting friends who have vaccinated dogs or even a walk around the block . We do NOT however recommend going to a park or a beach or any form of off leash exercise Mild oculonasal crusting which is consistent with feline herpes which is NOT in any way contagious to humans. Feline herpesvirus is widespread in the general cat population, with a reported seroprevalence of 50-97%.Transmission occurs via close contact with an infected cat and exposure to its respiratory, oral and ocular secretions. Kittens are most susceptible to primary infection, especially at 8-12 weeks of age when maternal antibodies decline. It is estimated that 80% of the feline herpes exposed cats become latently infected as the inactive virus resides in the trigeminal ganglion and corneal stroma. Of these cats, an estimated 45% will have spontaneous reactivation (recrudescence) of the virus sometime during their life either spontaneously or in response to stress.Common stressors include travel, relocation, boarding, breeding, parturition, lactation, and corticosteroid administration. Approximately 70% of latently infected cats shed virus after treatment with corticosteroids.Once stressed, a lag period of approximately 1 week occurs before viral shedding begins. Shedding then continues for a period of 1-2 weeks.1 A refractory phase of several months is then likely before viral shedding recurs.
FIV and the vaccination we have available: The vaccination protocol consists of three doses of vaccine given from 8 weeks of age or after. Doses should be given 2-4 weeks apart. After the initial course of vaccines, a yearly vaccination is required. For cats 6 months of age and older, it is recommended that an FIV test is performed prior to vaccination.

Eosinophilic granuloma complex : EGC is a form of ‘reaction pattern’ seen in the skin of cats that may potentially be initiated by a number of underlying disorders, but it is thought that most, if not all, cases represent some form of allergic (hypersensitivity) disorder. The skin lesions are often highly pruritic (itchy) and can be exacerbated by the cat licking them.
